Nelson Collado is a seasoned aviation professional whose career spans military and commercial aviation, with extensive leadership experience in both operational and recruitment roles. A decorated pilot with more than 5,300 hours of flight time, Nelson has honed their skills through a diverse range of high-stakes missions, leadership positions, and roles in recruitment and training.
Currently, Nelson serves as a Captain at Delta Air Lines, flying the Boeing 737 out of Atlanta, GA. In addition to their responsibilities as a senior pilot, he plays a pivotal role as a Pilot Recruiter and Outreach Ambassador, helping to develop the next generation of aviation talent through Delta’s Propel Pathway program. Known for his dedication to operational excellence, safety, and brand representation, Nelson has become a key figure in the recruitment and mentoring of future pilots. His role is not only about flying but about ensuring the airline upholds its reputation for top-tier service and safety standards.
Before transitioning to Delta Air Lines, Nelson enjoyed a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, where he served in various capacities across multiple bases. As an Executive Airlift Pilot at Scott AFB, he was responsible for transporting high-profile VIPs, including the First Lady, Speaker of the House, and U.S. Congressional Delegates. His expertise in high-level flight operations, combined with his discretion in handling sensitive missions, made them a trusted leader in the Air Force’s elite airlift team.
Nelson’s military career also includes service as a Rescue Pilot and Executive Officer at Kirtland AFB in New Mexico. Flying the HH-60G Pave Hawk, where he participated in complex, high-risk operations such as personnel recovery, search and rescue, and combat support missions. His leadership and ability to execute difficult tasks under pressure became the foundation for his reputation as a reliable and capable leader.
Prior to these roles, Nelson was a KC-10 Air Refueling Pilot and Mission Planning Officer at McGuire AFB in New Jersey, where he honed their skills in mission planning and air-to-air refueling operations. He coordinated and conducted vital air support for military operations worldwide, ensuring safety and efficiency under the most demanding conditions.
In addition to his military experience, Nelson was an experienced Captain at Envoy Air, a regional carrier where they flew the Embraer 175 and the CRJ. During this time, he played a crucial role in recruitment, mentoring, and developing future aviation professionals, aligning his passion for aviation with the airline’s goals of operational excellence and safety.
Nelson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Air Traffic Control from the University of North Dakota, graduating in 2015. He is also a graduate of numerous military and aviation training programs, including the C-40 Executive Airlift Course, Advanced Survival Evasion Resistance Escape School, and the Delta Air Lines Captain Leadership Course.
An advocate for diversity and inclusion in aviation, Nelson is actively involved with several professional organizations, including the Latino Pilots Association, RTAG Veterans Foundation, and the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals. These associations allow him to give back to the community, promote aviation careers to underrepresented groups, and support veterans transitioning into civilian careers.
Nelson holds numerous certifications, including the FAA Airline Transport Pilot certificate, with type ratings in several aircraft, including the Boeing 737, B757, B767, and CL-65. He maintains a Top-Secret Clearance and hold a valid FAA 1st Class Medical Certificate. With a total flight time of over 5,300 hours, he continues to build on their legacy as a highly skilled and respected pilot and leader.
